Most of Act 1 can be done in any order, at your own pace, with no penalty. A small number of things cannot — and those are the only reason a Baldur's Gate 3 Act 1 checklist is worth having, because the game does not warn you about most of them until they are already gone.
Short answer
Act 1 ends when you travel to the Shadow-Cursed Lands, either through the Mountain Pass or through Grymforge in the Underdark. Before that: recruit your companions, resolve the Grove last, and clear the Underdark and the Creche while you still can. Everything else can wait.
The one decision that reshapes the act
The Emerald Grove standoff is the branch everything else hangs off. Side with the tieflings and you keep a camp full of vendors, a long run of small quests, and a set of faces that show up again much later. Side with Minthara and raid the Grove, and all of that closes in a single scene — in exchange for her as a companion and a different path through the same act.
The practical consequence is about order, not morality: do everything else in the Wilderness first. The Grove is your last stop, not your first, because resolving it one way deletes content that is still available five minutes earlier.

Companions worth collecting early
- Shadowheart — on the beach, right after the crash.
- Astarion — just up the path from the beach, playing the wounded traveller.
- Gale — the hand sticking out of the waypoint stone north of the beach.
- Lae'zel — caged by tieflings on the way to the Grove.
- Wyll and Karlach — Wyll waits inside the Grove; he sends you after Karlach, who is worth hearing out rather than fighting.
- Halsin — freed during the Goblin Camp, but he only joins properly once the Grove situation is settled.
- Minthara — only reachable through the Grove raid, which is the trade named above.
Recruiting someone late costs you their reactions to everything that already happened. That is the real cost of leaving Karlach until last, not the missed fights.

Locations to clear before the Grove
- Blighted Village — the windmill, the apothecary cellar, and the well that drops into the Whispering Depths.
- Risen Road and Waukeen's Rest — a burning building on a timer of its own, and the road that opens up the Zhentarim.
- Owlbear cave — one fight, one cub, consequences much later.
- Sunlit Wetlands — Auntie Ethel's teahouse, which is far more dangerous than it looks at level 4.
- Goblin Camp — the Shattered Sanctum, the Defiled Temple and its moon puzzle, and the three leaders.
- Underdark — reachable from the well, from beneath the Goblin Camp, and through the Zhentarim hideout. Myconid colony, Selûnite outpost, and the road to Grymforge.
- Mountain Pass — Rosymorn Monastery Trail and Creche Y'llek, the single largest chunk of content people skip entirely.

The actual point of no return
Visiting the Mountain Pass does not end the act, and neither does reaching Grymforge. You can walk both directions for as long as you like. Act 1 closes when you commit to the Shadow-Cursed Lands — the game puts a clear confirmation in front of you at that moment, and that is the prompt to take seriously.
Once it closes, the Wilderness is gone. Unfinished vendors, unopened chests, and unrecruited companions do not come back.
Before you take that step
- Long rest until the camp scenes stop. Several companion quests only advance at camp, and hoarding rests is the most common way to lose them.
- Spend your gold. Grove and Underdark vendors will not follow you.
- Be around level 5. That is the level the start of Act 2 is built for, and the jump to third-level spells is the largest power spike in the game.
- Send anything you might want later to camp rather than selling it — Act 2 has fewer merchants and worse prices.
Baldur's Gate 3 FAQ
Is there a timer on the Emerald Grove?
Not a real one. The situation advances when the story advances, so you are not being punished for exploring — you are only punished for triggering the raid before you have done everything else.
Can I return to Act 1 after moving on?
No. The Wilderness closes behind you, which is why the checklist exists at all.
What level should I be at the end of Act 1?
Level 5 is the healthy target. Arriving at level 4 is survivable but noticeably rougher.
Do I have to choose between the Underdark and the Mountain Pass?
No — that is the most common misreading of the map. Both are Act 1 content, both can be completed in the same run, and only the Shadow-Cursed Lands ends the act.
Work outward from the beach, keep the Grove for last, and the only thing left to decide is which way you want the act to end.
