A Baldur's Gate 3 bard build has a reputation problem: people expect a support character and get one of the strongest damage dealers in the game, provided they pick the right college. The class does both, but not at the same time, and the choice happens at level 3.
Short answer
College of Swords with hand crossbows is the damage build and the easier one to play well. College of Lore is the control build and scales off Cutting Words and early Magical Secrets. Both want Charisma as high as you can get it and Expertise in Persuasion.
Stats and the first two levels
Charisma is your spellcasting stat, your save DC and your entire dialogue game, so it starts at 17 and goes to 20 as soon as feats allow. Dexterity is second for a Swords bard because it powers the crossbows; Constitution is second for a Lore bard because concentration checks decide whether Hypnotic Pattern holds.
Levels 1 and 2 are thin by design. Take Healing Word — a bonus action that picks someone up off the floor is worth more than any damage spell at that level — plus Faerie Fire and Command. Expertise arrives at level 3 and should go into Persuasion and either Sleight of Hand or Perception, depending on whether you have a dedicated rogue.

College of Swords: the damage build
Swords gives you martial weapons, a fighting style, and Blade Flourishes that spend Bardic Inspiration for extra effects. The build everyone eventually lands on is ranged: take Archery as your fighting style, equip two hand crossbows, and use Slashing Flourish to hit two targets with one attack.
The spike is level 6, where Extra Attack turns each turn into a genuine burst. From there, the Sharpshooter feat is the largest single damage increase available to you, and the reason to push accuracy-boosting gear over damage-boosting gear.
Two dips are worth considering once you are past level 6. Two levels of Fighter add Action Surge, which is one more full attack sequence in the round that matters. Alternatively, keeping pure bard to level 10 gets you Magical Secrets, and there are few honest arguments against taking them.

College of Lore: the control build
Lore trades weapon damage for Cutting Words — a reaction that subtracts from an enemy's attack roll or damage after you see the number, which quietly deletes several boss turns per fight. It also gets Magical Secrets at level 6 instead of 10, four levels earlier than anyone else.
That early access is the real draw. The usual picks are Counterspell, which the bard list otherwise has no answer for, and a heavy control or damage spell to fill the gap in your own list. Combined with Hypnotic Pattern and Hold Person from the base list, a Lore bard decides who is allowed to take a turn.

What both builds need from gear
- Anything that raises Charisma, including the once-per-run hair from the hag, if your build wants a bump to 18 early.
- Items that add to spell save DC — control spells are worthless if enemies save against them.
- For Swords: accuracy first, because Sharpshooter's penalty makes every point of attack bonus worth more than a point of damage.
- Elixirs. A bard has few passive defences, and a single elixir of hill giant strength or a defensive potion covers more ground than another cantrip.
Mistakes that cost the most
Spreading points across four stats is the biggest one — a bard with 16 Charisma is half a bard. Hoarding Bardic Inspiration is the second: it recharges on a short rest, and an unspent charge at the end of a fight is wasted resource. The third is treating the bard as the healer. Healing Word exists for emergencies; the class contributes far more by preventing the damage than by patching it afterwards.
Baldur's Gate 3 FAQ
Which bard college is best?
Swords for straightforward damage, Lore for control and for Counterspell four levels early. Valour sits between them and is the least distinct of the three.
Is bard good in Baldur's Gate 3?
Yes, and unusually so — it is one of the few classes that is simultaneously a top-tier damage dealer, the best face in dialogue, and a full caster.
Should I multiclass my bard?
Two levels of Fighter for Action Surge is the cleanest dip. Beyond that, staying pure to 10 for Magical Secrets is rarely wrong.
What race works best?
Anything with a Charisma bent, though in practice the race matters far less than getting Charisma to 20 and Expertise into Persuasion.
Pick the college for how you want the turn to feel — two crossbow bolts and a flourish, or one reaction that makes a boss miss — and the rest of the build follows from that single decision.
