Counter-Strike 2 runs on modest hardware by modern standards, which is the whole point of a competitive shooter. The published requirements tell you whether it will start; they say very little about whether it will feel the way Counter-Strike is supposed to feel.

Short answer

A 64-bit version of Windows, four CPU threads, 8 GB of RAM and a DirectX 11 graphics card with at least 1 GB of video memory. Storage is the requirement that has grown most since launch — budget well over 80 GB.

The published requirements

ComponentMinimum
OSWindows 10 64-bit
ProcessorFour hardware threads — an Intel Core i5 of roughly the i5-750 era or better
Memory8 GB RAM
GraphicsDirectX 11 capable with Shader Model 5.0 support and 1 GB or more of video memory
Storage85 GB and rising with updates

These are genuinely minimums. The game will launch on them; it will not give you the high frame rate that competitive play assumes.

What actually determines how it feels

Counter-Strike is a game of small, fast movements and instantaneous decisions, and three things dominate the experience:

  • Sustained frame rate, not peak. A card that averages 200 but drops to 90 when a smoke fills the screen will feel worse than one that sits at 140 the whole round. CS2's volumetric smoke is the most common source of that drop.
  • CPU over GPU. The game is unusually CPU-sensitive, and a strong processor with a mid-range card beats the reverse. This is the opposite of most modern titles.
  • Monitor refresh rate. The single largest upgrade for someone already meeting the requirements. Going from 60Hz to 144Hz changes what you are able to react to.

Storage is the real trap

The install has grown steadily since release and shows no sign of stopping. An SSD is not listed as required, and the game runs from a hard drive, but map loading and the first thirty seconds of a match are noticeably worse on one. If you have one SSD and are choosing what lives on it, this is a reasonable candidate.

Settings that buy the most frames

If you are near the minimum, the order to cut is: shadow quality, then model and texture detail, then effect detail. Leave resolution alone as long as you can — dropping it makes distant player models harder to distinguish, which costs you more than the frames gain. Lowering the smoke and particle quality specifically helps with the worst-case drops rather than the average.

Other platforms

The game supports Linux, where performance is now broadly comparable to Windows, and macOS support was dropped in the move from the previous version — that is the single most common surprise for returning players.

Counter-Strike 2 FAQ

Can I run CS2 on a laptop?

Usually yes, if it has a discrete graphics card and four CPU threads. Integrated graphics will start the game and struggle in fights.

Is 8 GB of RAM enough?

It meets the requirement, but with a browser and a voice client open, 16 GB is where the stutter stops.

Does CS2 need an SSD?

Not required, strongly recommended — mostly for load times rather than in-game performance.

Does CS2 still run on macOS?

No. Mac support did not carry over from the previous version.

Meet the CPU requirement first, put it on an SSD, and spend anything left over on a higher refresh monitor rather than a bigger graphics card.
