Cyberpunk 2077 has hundreds of guns and about a dozen that matter. The difference is not damage — damage scales with your level and crafting tier regardless — it is whether the weapon has an iconic effect that changes what you are able to do.
Short answer
Build around an iconic weapon whose effect matches your perks, not around raw damage numbers. Smart weapons for low-precision play, tech weapons for charged shots through cover, power weapons for ricochets, and blades for the fastest clear speed in the game.
The three weapon types, and what they are for
| Type | What it does | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Power | Bullets ricochet off surfaces; chargeable angles around cover | Players who like conventional shooting with a trick |
| Tech | Charged shots that penetrate walls and armour | Snipers, and anyone who wants to shoot through the room |
| Smart | Homing projectiles that track targets | Low-precision play, controller users, and heavy cyberware builds |
Picking one and committing matters because the perk trees are built around them. A build that spreads across all three ends up worse at each.

The iconics worth planning around
- Skippy — a smart pistol with a personality and a mode that aims for you. Its behaviour changes based on a conversation, so read the prompts rather than clicking through.
- Widow Maker — a tech rifle with toxic damage, and one of the cleanest answers to armoured enemies.
- Comrade's Hammer — a revolver that turns single shots into explosions. Slow, absurd, and entirely viable.
- Mantis Blades — the fastest way to end fights in the game once the relevant perks are in place, with the caveat that everything must be in melee range.
- Gorilla Arms — the unarmed option, which scales far better than it has any right to and doubles as a way through certain doors.
- Monowire — the highest-skill melee cyberware, with damage that rewards charging rather than spamming.

Why crafting tier beats the weapon
An iconic weapon can be upgraded to the highest tier, which is what keeps it relevant at every level. A non-iconic weapon of the same tier will usually have similar numbers and no special effect — so once you find an iconic whose effect you like, there is rarely a reason to replace it.
The practical rule: collect iconics as you find them, upgrade one, and ignore the rest of the loot entirely except as parts. Most of the time spent comparing dropped weapons in this game is wasted.

Match the weapon to the perks
This is where builds go wrong. Smart weapons need the cyberware and perks that improve tracking; without them they feel weak. Tech weapons need charge-related perks or they are slow rifles. Blades need the mobility and armour perks or you die crossing the room.
Decide the weapon type by about level 15 and spend everything in one direction. Respecs exist, but a focused build at level 20 outperforms a spread one at level 40.
Quickhacks are a weapon too
A netrunner build treats guns as a finisher rather than the main event. If you are drawn to that, the weapon choice matters far less than the cyberdeck and the RAM economy — and a silenced pistol is usually all the gun you need.
Cyberpunk 2077 FAQ
What is the strongest weapon in the game?
Depends entirely on the build. Fully upgraded Mantis Blades on a melee build clear faster than anything; a tech sniper build kills through walls before enemies know you are there.
Are iconic weapons missable?
Some are. Several are tied to side quests or specific choices, which is a reason to finish the gigs in an area before moving on.
Should I keep picking up loot?
For components, yes. For weapons to use, no — pick an iconic and upgrade it.
Do weapons scale with level?
Modern versions of the game scale loot to you, so an iconic found early does not become useless.
Pick a type, pick one iconic inside it, and put every perk point behind that decision.
