The fix is usually short; working out which fix applies is the part that takes time.
Short answer
Work from cheapest to most expensive: file verification, status page, overlays, drivers, config file, reinstall last.
Crashes at a consistent point are a content problem; crashes at random points are a hardware or driver one. Rolling a driver back is a legitimate fix rather than an admission of defeat. Two sources disagreeing usually means one of them stopped being updated.
If it comes back
Verifying files is cheap and non-destructive, which makes it the correct first step almost every time. Anti-cheat drivers are the one component where a plain reinstall genuinely helps. Nothing below assumes you have read anything else first. A status page tells you in five seconds what an hour of troubleshooting will not.
A crash that always happens at the same moment is a content problem, not a hardware one. Time spent confirming which version you are on is never wasted. Deleting the config file forces a clean regeneration and costs you nothing but your settings.
Is it you or is it them
Overlays from chat apps, capture tools and storefronts all hook the same rendering path. Anything that behaves differently on console than on PC is flagged where it matters. Running as administrator fixes a narrow class of problems and creates a different one with cloud saves.
- Check the official server status page before touching your own setup.
- Verify the game files before anything else.
- Treat any number without a date attached as approximate.
- Run once as administrator to rule out a permissions problem.
- Delete the config file to force a clean one.
- Check the date on whatever you are following.
If nothing above helps
If a fix requires disabling security software permanently, it is not a fix. The developers have changed their mind about this at least once, which explains the older advice. Logs are usually more specific than the error dialog that pointed you here. A black screen with audio still playing usually means the game is running fine and the output is wrong.
Where the game contradicts its own documentation, the game wins. Security software quarantines anti-cheat components regularly, and it does so silently. Packet loss and high ping produce different symptoms, and treating one as the other wastes time.
Overlays, and why they cause this
The community wisdom on this is roughly half right, and the half that is wrong costs the most time. Changing several settings at once makes the cause impossible to identify afterwards. Overlays from chat and capture software cause more launch failures than any other single category.
There is usually a fast way and a reliable way, and it is worth knowing which one you are choosing. An error code that returns after a reinstall is telling you the problem is not in the game files. A game that ran yesterday and not today changed because something else on the machine updated.
When a reinstall is justified
Do the cheap check before the expensive one — that ordering alone saves most of the frustration. Server-side outages look exactly like local connection problems, and checking the status page first saves an hour. File verification is non-destructive and repairs a surprising share of these cases.
Where people go wrong
- Treating a rare edge case as the normal behaviour and planning around it.
- Testing on a modified install and reporting the result as normal behaviour.
- Following console instructions on PC, or the reverse, and blaming the method.
- Copying a setup wholesale from a streamer without understanding what each part does.
Overwatch 2 FAQ
Could my antivirus be causing this?
It can. Security software and anti-cheat both sit at the same level of the system and occasionally fight.
Does this work the same on console and PC?
The logic is identical. Menu paths and button prompts differ, and any real difference is flagged above.
How long does this take?
Minutes if it goes cleanly, an evening if you hit the edge case in the caveats list. Neither is unusual.
Is this problem on my end?
Check the status page first. If Overwatch 2 is up for everyone else, then yes, and the checklist above is ordered by likelihood.
If something above does not match what you are seeing, the version is the first thing to check.
