The Witcher 3 alternate appearances are four small free DLC packs, one each for Geralt, Ciri, Triss and Yennefer. They are cosmetic only, they cost nothing, and they have been part of the game for years — which is exactly why people end up confused about where the toggle went.

Short answer

They are free DLC, not an in-game unlock. If they are installed, the new look is applied automatically the next time that character appears. If Geralt still looks the same, the pack for him is the one missing — each character has a separate download.

What each one changes

  • Geralt — a restyled version of his default outfit. Same silhouette, different detailing; it does not touch his armour stats or any gear you equip over it.
  • Ciri — a different outfit and hairstyle for the sections where you play as her, and for her cutscenes.
  • Triss — a new dress and a different hairstyle, which is the most visible of the four because Triss spends so much of Novigrad on screen.
  • Yennefer — a restyled dress and hair, closest in spirit to how she is described in the books.

None of them affect stats, dialogue, romance outcomes, or anything you can fail. They change models, and nothing else.

Why yours is not showing up

Three things account for almost every case. The first is the obvious one: the pack for that specific character was never installed, because they are four separate items rather than one bundle.

The second is that alternate appearances only apply to the character's own default look. Put Geralt in a full set of Grandmaster armour and you are looking at the armour, not at him — his alternate appearance is underneath it and invisible. Strip back to no chest armour to actually see the difference.

The third is timing. A character already on screen in a running scene will not swap models mid-conversation. Move to the next area or the next quest beat and the new look will be there.

Where they live on each platform

On PC they are handled by whichever store you own the game on: they appear in that game's DLC list, and installing them is all there is to it. On console the game has its own downloadable content menu, and each appearance sits there as its own entry to enable or disable.

The complete edition and the modern next-gen release ship with all of this content already included, which is why newer players often never see a download step at all — the looks are simply there from the first launch.

What alternate appearances are not

They are not a character creator, and this is the expectation that causes most of the disappointment. The Witcher 3 has no appearance sliders. What it does have, alongside the DLC looks, are three separate systems people often mean when they search for this:

  • Barbers change Geralt's hair and beard for a small fee, in most major settlements. Beard length also grows over time on its own.
  • Dyes, added with Blood and Wine, recolour armour sets — the closest thing to real customisation in the game.
  • Mods on PC go far beyond any of this, at the usual cost of breaking after patches.

Should you turn them on

For a first playthrough, it barely matters — you have no version to compare against, and the writing is unaffected either way. For a replay, the Triss and Yennefer packs do more work than they should: seeing a familiar character in a different silhouette quietly resets how familiar the scene feels. Geralt's is the one most people install and then never notice, because his armour covers it within the first hour.

The Witcher 3 FAQ

Do alternate appearances cost anything?

No. All four have been free since release, and they are included outright in the complete and next-gen editions.

Can I switch back to the original look?

Yes, by disabling or uninstalling that character's pack. Nothing about your save depends on it.

Do they work in New Game Plus?

Yes. They are model swaps, so they apply to any save, new or carried over.

Is there an alternate appearance for other characters?

No — the official packs cover Geralt, Ciri, Triss and Yennefer only. Anything beyond those four is a mod.

If you want the short version: install all four, then judge them with Geralt's chest armour off, because that is the only time you will actually see his.
